Baveno
Lake Maggiore is Italy’s second largest lake. Located in the Italian Lakes District, it is in two countries because its northern tip lies in Switzerland. It is less than 35 miles from Milan's Malpensa airport and more low-keyed than Lake Como.
Water taxis take passengers to the littls towns around the Lake. You can also take a water taxi to the Borromee Islands - Isola Madre, Isola Pescatori and Isola Bella.
The small town of Stresa is the jewel of Lago Maggiore and is its major toursit attraction. Many international cultural and artistic events are held in Stresa. There is a Cablecar that can be taken from Stresa to the top of Monte Mottarone - a ski resort (1500 meters).
We stayed in Baveno - another small town, just north of Stresa. There are cafes and restaurants surrounding the Plaza. One of the nights we were in Baveno, there was a small talent show in the Plaza. It's very relaxing to walk along Baveno's lakeside promenade - that has wonderful views of the Lake and the Borromee Islands.
